Comments: This is a great article with many helpful strategies, especially about being proactive. I would also add that teachers must establish rules/classroom managmement immediately, at the beginning of the term, before any instruction can be effective. Students will be motivated when they understand the expectations and objectives of the course, and ultimately how it will make them successful. As the article mentioned, keep the rules concise, and be consistent. Most importantly, do not be afraid to enforce the rules. I think it is easy for new teachers to feel intimidated to be the "bad guy" and feel they need to be th students' friend. Big mistake. You can be friendly, but always be consistent, always be the teacher. They will respect that.
