Arranging The Classroom

The classroom must be arranged to make teaching as efficient as possible.

Your classroom arrangement will depend on:

The size of the classroom

The shape of the classroom

Can you move the chairs?

Can you move the tables?

Can all students see the point of focus? (board? Television? Etc)

Can all the students hear? Is there noise?

Sometimes it is not possible to change how the classroom is set up, which means that a teacher has to adapt activities to the layout of the classroom.

Factors To Consider

For group work, how many people will be working together and what do they need to do?

Can you move around the room to monitor activities?

Where is the board located?

Are there windows in your classroom, will these be a distraction for students sitting close to them?

Can ss move?

Semi-Circle

the semi-circle allows all students to have a central focal point which supports for activities, meetings, or instructional games. This arrangement can be combined with desks and table set out in rows or group tables in a small class.

The Runway Seating

This type of seating involves arranging the classroom with the teacher working in the middle with learners seated either side. It is ideal for discussion because it creates two groups of students who can see each other easily. Just remember, as you teach in the center aisle, you may have the unnerving feeling of being surrounded.

Face to Face Seating

If you assign a lot of group work or split your class into teams for games or competitions, you might desire face to face seating arrangement. This is an ideal seating for group work.

Standard Teacher At the Front Of The Room Seating

The traditional classroom in which the teacher is at the head of the classroom is ideal for large groups.

Battleship seating

This layout can be a useful way to break up students from set patterns of seating. It can be a useful way to have students work on different tasks and to either pass the tasks around to the next group or to move around to different workstations in the class at set intervals. It allows for group work and direct instruction.

Complete the table below with the name that you think best describes the layout and think of some of the advantages and disadvantages to each layout for your classes:
